Mercy Street Theatre Company has announced casting for the final show in their third season, LUZ ESTRADA. Performances begin June 25, 2017, and the show runs through July 16 at The Frontier Theater, 1106 W. Thorndale.

LUZ ESTRADA is a modern day adaptation of Aristophanes’ LYSISTRATA by Dusty Wilson, set in the cartel wars of northern Mexico. After learning of her family’s murder by the local cartel leader, Luz Estrada volunteers for her town’s long-vacant position of sheriff. With her new authority, she enlists the citizens of her town to fight a war against a drug lord.

“Dusty’s adaptation doesn’t just give us a modern retelling of Lysistrata; by re-framing it in a startlingly contemporary context, we can explore the ways in which young people, particularly women, can take direct action to combat the injustices they see around them. Through this updating of Aristophanes’ epic tale of female empowerment, we see what it takes to stand up to a violent, antagonistic world that has surprising parallels to our own,” says Artistic Director Julia Rohed.

The cast will feature Sipriano Cahue as El Cuicui, David Gonzalez as El Oso, Matthew Harris as Santos, Nicole Velasco Lockard as Carlotta, Victor Marana as Vidal, Gaby Moldovan as La Princesa, Ali Janes-Paulsen as Livvy, Marci Portugal as Mireya, Valeria Rosero as Luz Estrada and Ian Michael Smith as Javier.

The production team includes Sonja Lynn Mata (Asst Director), Jennifer Roseman (Stage Manager), Alaina Moore (Costume Designer), Jordan Siragusa (Scenic Designer), John Kelly (Lighting Designer), Shain Longbehn (Sound Designer), Juan Castaneda (Dramaturg), Almanya Narula (Fight Choreographer), John Tervanis (Co-Fight Choreographer) and Danielle Stack (Production Manager).
