Goodman Announces Tony Award-Winning Design Team for WAR PAINT

The Goodman has made further moves to aim its sights on a Broadway run for the upcoming WAR PAINT, starring Patti Lupone and Christine Ebersole. Six-time Tony Award winner Catherine Zuber (Light in the Piazza, South Pacific) will design the costumes for the musical centered on cosmetics titans Helena Rubinstein (LuPone) and Elizabeth Arden (Ebersole), who defined beauty standards for the first half of the 20th Century. Two-time Tony Award winner Brian Ronan (Beautiful, Book of Mormon) will design the sound, Tony winner and veteran of over fifty Broadway productions Kenneth Posner (Wicked, Hairspray, Kinky Boots) will offer the lighting design, and Hamilton designer David Korins will provide the scenery. Broadway stars John Dossett and Douglas Sills have also been announced as additional cast members.

Most big musicals that have originated at the Goodman have had commercial producers attached to the production beforehand, who enhance the production with funds intended to help develop the piece for Broadway with varying degrees of control over the project. Not so with WAR PAINT. This production is a significant outlay for the Goodman, which seems to be paying off in advance ticket sales, as an additional week has been added to the limited run well in advance. Tickets are already at a Broadway level, topping out at around $175. Still, it would seem an immense challenge to recoup the costs of such a large production with so much star talent in this limited run, and that the Goodman would be looking for the true rewards to be reaped on Broadway.
