Tony Adams Ends 12-Year Run as Halcyon Artistic Director, Regina Victor Named Associate Producer

Halcyon Theatre has annouced that Tony Adams will end his 12-year run as artistic director in June.

The company has been planning for Adams departure, for the past 18 months, and has someone prepped to take over — but won’t yet say who that is. In the mean time, as part of the leadership transition, Regina Victor has Joined the company as Associate Producer. Victor is a producer, director, dramaturg, arts journalist, and performer. They have produced shows and events for the Bay Area Playwrights Festival, Steppenwolf Theatre, Pegasus Theatre, and more. Their writing can be found in Howlround, American Theatre Magazine, The Windy City Times and on Rescripted, the arts journalism platform they founded in 2017.

“Twelve years is a long time,” Adams said, adding that what he is most proud of is the Albany Park institution’s focus on creating theatre that looks like our world. “From the start, we have consistently produced plays by women and people of color. When we started, few were doing what we are doing. Now, representation and equity are at the forefront of decisions being made at theatre companies across the city and across the nation. I couldn’t be prouder to have been a part of that movement.”

“I’ve been lucky enough to see many artists grow from novices to far beyond what they thought was possible,” Adams continued. “I’ve been able to watch artists go from church basements to Broadway; from not being able to get another artistic director to have coffee with them, to being hired and commissioned by some of the largest theatres in the country. We were one of the first theatres in the city to provide free seating for our audiences through our Radical Hospitality program, allowing thousands of people to see a play that couldn’t otherwise afford to. It has been an amazing time. We are at a point where our board is stronger than ever and our ensemble is excited for the future. Now, it is time to pass the torch of leadership on. While we are not quite ready to publicly announce who the next Artistic Director will be, they are awesome. I’m excited to see them build upon the first twelve years; I’m excited for Halcyon to soar into the future.”
