The League of Chicago Theatres has announced the recipients of honors at its 40th Anniversary gala, Monday, May 20, 2019 at the Palmer House Hilton.
Legendary Chicago actor Mike Nussbaum, the oldest working member of Actor’s Equity Association, will be honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Nussbaum’s career has spanned the range of modern Chicago —since the first show of the Compass Players, the precursor to The Second City. He appeared in the original production of Glengarry Glen Ross at Mamet and Macy’s St. Nicholas Theatre Company. And has hardly slowed down since. Over the years he has appeared in film such as “Field of Dreams,” “House of Games,” “Things Change,” “Fatal Attraction” and “Men In Black” — and scores of Chicago theater productions, including in recent years “Smokefall” at the Goodman, and “Relativity” at Northlight, where he is a frequent collaborator. Upcoming, he’s appearing in Chicago Shakespeare’s upcoming “Hamlet” as one of the grave diggers opposite Greg Vinkler. His performance in Goodman’s production of “Glengarry Glen Ross” received a Drama Desk Award in 1984 when it transferred to Broadway.
Free Street Theater will be presented with the Tribute Award. Free Street creates community oriented, ensemble-created works—and has been doing it for 50 years. 30-year-old Aguijón Theater, one of the nation’s most respected Spanish and bilingual theater companies, will be presented with the Artistic Achievement Award. A Special Tribute Award will also be given to Derrick Sanders and Allstate Insurance Company honoring their support of the August Wilson Monologue Competition. The Broadway In Chicago Emerging Theatre Award will also be presented, but the winner is yet to be announced.
Tickets to the gala are available for $350 per person, and all proceeds benefit the League of Chicago Theatres. Cocktails will begin at 5:30pm with an elegant dinner, entertainment and awards at 6:30pm.To purchase tickets, or for sponsorship opportunities and participation information, visit www.chicagoplays.com or call 312-554-9800.
