BLANCHE DUBOIS – about 30 yo. – ALREADY CAST

STELLA KOWALSKI – about 25yo – Kind, generous, sensual; small of frame – her pregnancy shows large on her. Caught between two worlds: the past with her (southern aristocratic, entitled, educated) and the present with her husband (working class, poor, physical, poorly educated.) She’s extremely
attracted to her husband, but fiercely loyal to her sister. She loves them both. “…of a background obviously quite different from her husband’s.”

STANLEY KOWALSKI – about 28 or 30yo – Physical; lives a natural life unadorned and unencumbered; a masculine animal; physically attractive and extremely sexual; on top of the world; loves life and the pleasures it offers; ambitious and domineering; proud; emotional; violent at times, sometimes child-like, sometimes confused and hurt.

HAROLD MITCHELL (MITCH) – about 28 or 30yo – A regular guy; wears his heart on his sleeve; masculine; thoughtful; cares for his dying mother; lonely; searching for a life companion, someone who would be a good wife and a mother for his children. Working class. Searching for someone to
love. Blanche says of Mitch: “That one seems – superior to the others.” And he does, in fact, have a more poetic and gentle nature than most of his friends.

EUNICE HUBBELL – 40 to 55yo – The formidable, plain, strong woman who lives upstairs with her husband. They own the building; they fight constantly – both verbally and physically. She is jealous and proud, but also kindly and practical. Working class; uneducated, but smart and knowing about people. She’s a “salt of the earth” kind of women without being “holier than thou.” Didn’t have any children that survived.

STEVE HUBBELL – 40 to 50yo – Middle-aged man…feels like he’s been married forever. Likes to play around a bit; young women make him happy. Strong but a bit worn-out; likes his beer and whiskey. Fighting with the wife is part of his life. No children.

PABLO GONZALAS – 25 to 40yo – Mexican; A guy in the Quarter; a poker and drinking buddy.

A YOUNG COLLECTOR (LUCIO FRANCESCO ROMANO) – 19yo – Italian; collecting for the newspaper; just starting college – pre-med. Attractive, naïve, young, polite, inexperienced.

A DOCTOR – 50 to 65yo – Distinguished; a gentleman of the old south; educated, well-spoken, kind. From the State Institution.

A MATRON – 50 to 65yo – A nurse from the State Institution; strong, brusque, businesslike. Slightly tyrannical.

A MEXICAN WOMAN

DENIZENS OF THE FRENCH QUARTER
