Congo Square Theatre Company has announced its  2016/2017 season, with a focus
on the Great Migration and the historic movement of African-Americans from the South to the North.

The 16/17 season will highlight several areas of concern in the African-American community such as: homelessness, youth violence, single parenting, and the resilience of African-Americans in their efforts to survive and thrive in the mist of adversity.

“With all of the issues currently being faced by the African-American community, it’s clear that these topics are still considered controversial here Chicago. It is vital that Congo Square delve into the conversation and connect with our community around these issues.”, says Executive Director TaRon Patton.

The OWNING OUR WORTH series will return in spring 2017. This conversation series iS Congo Square’s way of connecting and building with our community, via 3-5 conversations held throughout the season. This year’s theme for the series is: Resistance and Resilience, and will feature staged readings of Black Protest plays from the era of the Great Migration. Conversations are free to the public and will discuss the transformation of art and duty as the community works to make the world a better place.

This year’s AUGUST WILSON NEW PLAY INITIATIVE (AWNPI) workshop will feature THE MASTER COMIC, by Ensemble member Aaron Todd Douglas, winner of the Henrik Ibsen Scholarship.

The finale production for 2017 will be the Chicago premiere of Janine Naber’s award-winning SERIAL BLACK FACE, directed by Sam Roberson, running May 26 – July 2 2017.
